Fake California Road Signs Mock the State’s Immigration Policies

Since mid-2017, the Golden State has seen a number of politically charged fake road signs, mostly focused on its perceived friendliness to immigrants.

Drivers entering California are being greeted with signs proclaiming the liberal bastion an “OFFICIAL SANCTUARY STATE,” according to photos and videos circulating on social media appearing to show a prankster attached the official-looking blue signs just below legitimate “Welcome to California” markers.

The sanctuary state sign, which adds “Felons, Illegals and MS13 [gang members] welcome,” is similar to one hung up by a Malibu activist last year.

“Democrats Need The Votes!” reads a message on the signs, which are plastered with the Great Seal of California and a donkey, one of the symbols of the Democratic Party.

California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) spokesman Mark Dinger told Fox News on Tuesday that one of the signs was taken down yesterday on Interstate-15 near the California/Nevada border. A crew has been dispatched today to remove another sign spotted on I-40 near the border with Arizona, he added. Read more.

When Woodland Empire Ale Craft opened in January, the brewery announced its presence with a billboard mimicking the nearby green and yellow signs on the westbound entrance of the I-184 Connector. The sign read like a freeway off-ramp: “Craft beer: right here.” An arrow points to the brewery parking lot.

The Idaho Transportation Department is not amused.

Rick Barron, his wife and his sister-in-law weren’t expecting much excitement on their drive to the airport before dawn Monday, so you could imagine their surprise when they spotted an electronic road-construction sign on Boulder’s Foothills Parkway that gave an unnerving warning.

“Zombies ahead.”

“We all three just cracked up — it was very funny,” said Barron, 66, of Boulder. “We decided that we ought to be especially alert since it was 4 a.m.”

Boulder became the latest in a long list of cities hit by zombie-loving hackers early Monday when someone broke into the messaging box on a sign stationed along the shoulder of Foothills Parkway near Baseline Road and changed the message to warn of the undead. An underground group of zombie-loving pranksters has been reprogramming electronic road signs across the country for the past few years. Continue reading “Zombies Ahead!”

Curbing Preventable Injuries

From preventableinjuries, via Laughing Squid & Wooster Collective, September 07, 2010

Marking the back to school term, Preventable together with BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation and the District of West Vancouver have launched an optical illusion geared to making drivers slow down at high-risk intersections.

The optical illusion of an illustrated girl chasing a ball has been placed on the road northbound at 22nd street in West Vancouver. There are signs leading up to it saying “you’re probably not expecting kids to run out on the road” to prepare drivers. The installation is meant to draw attention to the risk of children running into the street and was carefully tested before being put in place. It is in place for a few days only and is being monitored as a pilot to ensure pedestrian and driver safety are not risked. The illusion rises up gradually from about 100 feet away as not to surprise drivers, and it fades away by the time a driver approaches.
