October 23, 2011:
After he”s done dangling his oeuvre from the Guggenheim”s atrium, Maurizio Cattelan plans to retire from the art world. It”ll be like being dead””or resurrected.
Maurizio Cattelan”s first show in New York, in 1994, consisted of a self-portrait in the form of a live donkey wandering around a gallery under a chandelier, braying inconsolably. That show wasn”t up long””there were noise complaints””but even now, when his always-wry sculptures sell for millions and his unbelievably elaborate full-rotunda Guggenheim retrospective is about to open, he retains that same posture of self-suspicion. “Today I would say I don”t know how I arrived at this point,” he says, sitting on a bench near a playground on West 28th Street, not far from the West Chelsea galleries, cocking a knowing eyebrow at a sudden whiff of marijuana in the air.* “I don”t know how I arrived at this point, at the Guggenheim. There must be something wrong somewhere.”

Aussie penis pranksters deface Google Street View
by Asher Moses
The Sydney Morning Herald
September 9, 2011
Pranksters have been playing tricks on Google’s Street View cameras ever since the mapping tool was first launched in 2007, but miscreants in Victoria have delivered a low blow.
Street View images of Long Gully and Maiden Gully near Bendigo in Victoria have been defaced with a giant green penis outline after vandals climbed on top of one of Google’s camera-equipped cars and drew the phallus on its camera lens.
The find was first discovered by users on BuzzFeed and has since gone viral across the web. Google Australia has yet to remove the images or make a comment on the matter – and it is not clear who is responsible.
It follows the June discovery of an array of six penises etched into the grass of a school in Waikato, New Zealand. Continue reading “Google Street Theater, Act III”

Osaka tries to find out who dressed statues
The Japan Times
Aug. 9, 2011
Osaka “” Sculptures adorning the sidewalks along Osaka’s Midosuji street were found clad in red one morning in July, sparking speculation as to who did it and why.
Osaka City Hall received dozens of phone calls, including some from the Tokyo metropolitan area, a city official said. One caller even half-jokingly criticized the city after staff removed the colorful attire, saying, “You guys don’t understand a joke.”
The mystery also took a twist after footage from a security video was released that purportedly showed the person who may have decorated the figures, which include works by such artists as Kotaro Takamura and Auguste Rodin.
The city was first alerted to the gag around 9 a.m. on July 25. On a roughly 1 km stretch of Midosuji, starting just across the river from City Hall, 19 sculptures were found to have been dressed in red.
Whoever carried out the deed apparently bought the costumes in a shop and then dyed them. Some also had color-coordinated belts around their waists. A 39-year-old man who saw some of the statues said, “They matched perfectly!” Continue reading “Mysterious Fashionista Hits Osaka”
