Los Angeles (AP) — A New Jersey man has been charged in Los Angeles for hacking Church of Scientology Web sites earlier this year.

The U.S. attorney’s office said Friday that Dmitriy Guzner claims to be a member of an Internet-based group called “Anonymous,” which leads protests against the Church of Scientology for allegedly trying to silence its critics through lawsuits.

Prosecutors say the 18-year-old Guzner helped overload the church’s Web site with traffic to cripple its servers in January. The church has since deployed technology that helps protect against so-called denial-of-service attacks.

Prosecutors say Guzner, of Verona, N.J., has agreed to plead guilty to computer hacking and faces up to 10 years in federal prison.
