There are two great film festival opportunities to watch “Joey Skaggs: Metamorphosis, Cockroach Miracle Cure“, the sixth film in the new oral history web series, “Joey Skaggs Satire and Art Activism, 1960s to the Present and Beyond“:

The first, the International Social Change Film Festival, starts on Monday, September 12, 2022 with an online-only screening available for a month. Later in the Fall this festival will have in-person screenings. The time and place are TBA.
 
 
On September 30, 2022, the New Jersey International Film Festival will host an in-person screening at 7pm. Starting at midnight the same day, the film is available for online streaming for 24 hours. Details are here.

Nobody expected to see a whale beached along the Seine last Friday…


“Elaborate ‘Dead Whale' Stunt Takes Parisians By Surprise”

It wasn't a sight for the fainthearted.

On Friday, Parisians woke to find a massive sperm whale beached along the river Seine, drawing some shock and concern from some passersby.

Fortunately for animal lovers, the giant carcass, which was seen being tended to by people in white jumpsuits, was a fake — though the object of a very real concern.

Belgian artist collective Captain Boomer, which took responsibility for the stirring display, said they carried out the performance art to raise awareness about the beaching of whales and dolphins and how humans play a role.

To assist in delivering this message, artists dressed up like forensic scientists and pretended to perform tests on the animal while others interacted with the public. (more…)

Anti-corporate art fest is constantly evolving

It seems fitting that the news conference for Montreal’s Infringement Festival is taking place at Barfly, the popular watering hole that occasionally resembles a mix between a crust-punk squat and a revolutionary headquarters.

The 11-day festival, which runs until June 28, fiercely opposes corporate influence on culture, and encourages activist art. This includes theatre, music, visual arts and everything in between – which, judging from the masked fellow seated beside me, might include Mexican wrestling or maybe a bank heist.

“Infringement is a chance to challenge any aspect of the monoculture that … you think there’s a problem with,” organizer Jason McLean says. (more…)
