Malibu, Calif. (AP) — Barbie’s Malibu Dream House is coming true.

On the eve of her 50th birthday, interior decorator Jonathan Adler has decked out a real-life 3,500-square-foot pad overlooking the Pacific Ocean to look like the blond doll’s outrageous home.

Barbie Dream House

Adler, who was commissioned by toy maker Mattel Inc. to decorate the house for Monday’s party, said outfitting the sleek mansion (a property that’s frequently rented for film and photography shoots) took six months of planning and a few weeks to install.

“Barbie was a dream client because she doesn’t exist as a person,” Adler said. “She exists as fantasy and is the perfect client because she’s always happy and fun and loves everything. I thought to myself, ‘How would Barbie live?’ What I thought was Barbie would have a house that is glamorous, kittenish, chic, colorful and happy – as well as functional.”

Adler lined Barbie’s bedroom with wall-to-wall pink carpeting emblazoned with her initial. The closet is filled with 50 pairs of pink peep-toe heels while her kitchen is stocked with cupcake-making ingredients. An in-house museum features 25 vintage Barbie dolls on display. In the garage? A pink Volkswagen New Beetle with a motorized pop-up vanity in the trunk. Read the rest of this article here.

News Analysis: China”s Prank Thwarts “˜Theft of Culture”
    by W.J. Elvin III, March 3, 2009

artchinanewsafpgi-200Do pranks have a role in repairing theft of culture? Apparently the Chinese think so. Quite often, theft of culture refers to items captured by a conquering army, so-called “spoils of war,” sometimes excused as “war souvenirs.” There are many other ways items of cultural significance are liberated from their proper homes including outright theft, sale by someone who has no right to sell, and treasure hunting (sometimes in the respectable guise of archaeology), to name a few.

Examples could be drawn from the world over (see More nations demanding return of relics, from Business Inquirer) but this particular case is from China, formerly a huge shopping mart for collectors and now trying to reclaim some historic cultural items it considers plundered. When two extraordinarily valuable Chinese bronzes went up for auction the other day, the high bidder at nearly $40-million, a Chinese government official, then refused to pay. Open Call for Human Rights Art [English & Polish]

Invitation to participate in “STAND-UP. Art about Human Rights” project:

    Stand Up Call for Artists

    Presentation:

Connecting aims and activities of two organizations — One World Association, which acts as a part of the Service Civil International organization, and Poznan Academy of Fine Arts Student Society in Poland — we want to present different points of view on Human Rights issues and raise awareness about them by presenting art works of activists – artists with different experience, from different fields, cultures and societies.

Besides exhibition we are planning also other punctual events like, for example, evening film projections, outdoor actions and workshops. “STAND-UP. Art about Human Rights” project will respond to the growing needs for acceptance and respect for diversity, dialog and social reflection.

What we are looking for: Continue reading “Open Call for Human Rights Art [English & Polish]”

    Fossil Fools Day

From Westside Climate Action, February 5, 2009:

Climate Camp hits the City of London on April Fools Day

Stopping carbon markets : Because nature doesn”t do bailouts

anti_banker_smallerFirst the city traders speculated with our homes, jobs and money – with disastrous results. Now they are speculating with our climate and the very future of life on earth – and once again our governments are cheering them on.

By creating a brain-bending system of carbon pollution licenses, fossil fuel companies and trading firms have found a way to keep on churning out global warming gases and to reap huge windfall profits at the same time. Meanwhile, the UK government is justifying a third runway at Heathrow and a coal-fired power station at Kingsnorth by saying that these new “carbon trading” schemes will magically make all their emissions vanish. They are handing control of our climate over to the same people and systems that caused the financial collapse.

All the workable and fair alternatives aren”t getting a look-in. We need to stop this foolishness. We”ve camped against the Heathrow runway, we”ve camped against the Kingsnorth coal power station. Now its time to camp against the over-arching problem: absolute faith in unfettered markets and endless economic growth.

On April 1st the G20 leaders arrive in London. At a time of climate crisis their response to the market meltdown is emergency loans to car manufacturers, increased spending to encourage consumption, and bailouts for the very people who got us into this mess – just the things that will make the climate crisis worse. Don”t let them get away with it: join our camp in the Square Mile! Gather at noon, April 1st, at the European Climate Exchange, Hasilwood House, 62 Bishopsgate, EC2N 4AW. Bring a pop-up tent, sleeping bag, wind turbine, mobile cinema, action plans and ideas”¦let”s imagine another world. Don”t let the financial and fossil fools make the rules!

For updates, information or to get involved, visit: www.climatecamp.org.uk/g20 or subscribe to announcements at: //lists.riseup.net/www/subrequest/climatecamp

To get more involved, come to our planning meetings: February 14th in London. Arrive at the library house, 52 Knatchbull road, at 1 pm for a 1:30 start and bring food to share.
